Follow Friday (34)

Is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

This is a blog hop for bloggers to get to know other bloggers, & to help some gain more of a following and support system for their blog. It looks like it should be a lot of fun. To join in, go to the host's page and follow the steps they have posted up there. =D

Some music is provided for you at the bottom. For you enjoyment. Hope you all have a wonderful day!

This week's question is...

What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

Ummmm.... To be 100% honest, I really don't know how to answer this week's question. I don't really know if I have any writing device's or tricks that annoy me. I know there are some things that get to me in books though like: stereotypes of characters, being told instead of shown, when there JUST happens to be someone there to save the day for the main character. Things like that in books really get to me. I also HATE really long chapters, lol. I would rather have a ton of short chapters then a few really long chapters. Mm.... That's all I can really think about. Does any of this bother you guy/girls as well?

I was a bit unsure of the question too this week, but my current book is irritating me a little. Good answers though, long chapters that have breaks in them is ok though, I've read a few like that lately.

Stereotypical character does get to me at times especially if there is a high school scenario. They tend to do stuff expected out of them, and it get's very boring.

Hi! There's not too much that irritates me. Long chapters, I guess, can be a bit annoying. My current read, has many short chapters. You might like it - Ethereal by Addison Moore.

I don't care for cliffhangers either, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.

I first saw the MV of Safe and Sound, and I'm like, OMG she doesn't like Taylor! Or the song! O_O
But then I read you answer..and hey. I'm freaking out again. Haha
Sorry, it's just that I'm a fan of T, and the song, and the movie. :D

I don't know, part of me agrees with you on the long chapters thing. I always see myself counting the pages til next chapter. And it frustrates me whenever I feel like I could count til the ending. But it never counts to me as one thing that I really don't like about a book. :)

Stereotypes and coincidences are annoying, indeed. It's like the writer didn't want to think harder.

Hahaha! Long chapters do get irritating! I'm like "get over already". ;) Some chapters are almost 30-40 pages long... :/

Yeah, I hate being told things rather than shown... totally takes away from the novel and feels like a huge letdown... *old follower*

Authors are really missing out on a trick when they tell instead of show - there's so much more to explore that way!

@Naomi: I can't deal with long chapters at all. At least most of the time.

@Aman: LOL. I know what you mean.

@Marilyn: I think I am just a picky reader.... LOL

@Julie: Cliffhangers can be torturous as well. Especially when the next book is still a while away from being published.

@Michelle: Yea, I count my progress in the book by the chapters, so long chapters make it feel like it take a LOT longer to finish a book then when it has short chapters. No, I like Taylor's music and I love the movie. =D

@Kazhy: Writing isn't easy, I know this because I'm in the process of writing my own, but you really have to think of the unthinkable for your book. =D

@The Readdicts: Yea.... I have no clue how someone can write a 30-40 page long chapter. I'm writing my own book now but my longest chapter is like 7 pages or so.

@Keely: Yea, I really like to get a picture in my head.

@Rinn: I totally agree.

@Alyssa: Yes, they are.

I don't think I ever notice how long a chapter is, honestly. But I do find myself thinking, "Well, wasn't that a little too convenient!" sometimes when a rescue comes from nowhere. I think the literary term for that is "deus ex machina"? Someone else help me out here if I'm wrong! I think I remember this from my looonnnggg ago college days. :)

@Sarah: I'm not sure about the name. I will google it and see if I can get a definition for it. I never knew something like that had a literal name for it in writing. Thanks for the insight. As for me I definitely ALWAYS notice the length of a chapter. LOL, weird I guess. =D

HI! New follower here. I agree with stereotypes and super long chapters being annoying. Stereotypes are boring and it's hard to believe the character is real. Long chapters get on my nerves because sometimes you are limited on time for reading and if the chapter keeps going and going you don't have a good stopping place. Thanks for sharing.

Also, I am giving away a Kindle or Nook (winners choice) on my blog if you are interested. There is only 1 day left to enter!

Peace & Love
