Just your average
boy-meets-girl,
girl-kills-people story...

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: he kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead - keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian house she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

Opening Sentence: The grease-slicked hair is a dead giveaway - no pun intended.

Review:

Okay, I admit it. Despite the really good reviews that I have read for this book and for how long I have wanted to read it, I was less then enthusiastic about starting it. All I could think to myself was, "Why did you pick this book up, Cassie? You HATE, HATE ghost stories!"

After reading this book though, you know what I'm thinking... "OMFG! Anna, you have finally made me a ghost lover." Well at least for this one particular ghost that is.

I am a hopeless romantic at heart. With any good romance (especially in a series) I need to know that there is going to be a happy ending. And this is why I dread reading about ghost stories. I mean, how can there be a happy ending when one of the people in the "love" story is already dead? Are you going to some how bring that person back to life (so unbelievable), or are you going to make it a tragedy and the "living" one dies and they find their happily-ever-after in the... well... after life?

But with Anna... I couldn't help but root for Theseus Cassio Lowood and Anna Korlov. Better know as Cas and Anna Dressed in Blood.

And boy are parts of this book, just straight up creepy. Things happen that I definitely did not see coming. Like Anna ripping a boy in half. People being dismembered and parts of them eaten... *Shudders* This book may have had me rooting for a human-ghost romance for the first time ever, but it also effectively made me terrified of ghost's for the first time in my life as well. & that really sucks, since I believe in ghost's 100%.

There are some things that I wish would have been explained more... Like why Anna was able to spare Cas when she couldn't spare anyone else. What the "blood bond" with the athame was. And a few other things, they really weren't big enough issues for me to distract from the story. I wish Cas would have been a little wiser on the fact that his "nightmares" were really more then that and that he was truly being haunted by something from his past (I had that part figured out from almost the beginning and how it was following him and where it was... poor kitty).

Overall, I liked this book. I went right out and put Girl of Nightmares (the second book in this series) on hold at my library. I can't wait to see where Kendare Blake takes us next in this series and I truly hope that I for once, continue to root for this love story. Fingers crossed.

P.S. I absolutely love the friends that Cas is finally able to make in this story. Thomas and Carmel are a blast to read about and so different from Cas' personality that it really bring something extra special to this story.
