Welcome to Morganville, Texas.
Don't stay out after dark.

It's a small college town filled with quirky characters. But when the sun goes down, the bad comes out. Because in Morganville, there is an evil that lurks in the darkest shadows - one that will spill out into the bright light of day.

Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation. The popular girls never let her forget just where she ranks on the school's social scene: somewhere less than zero. And Claire really doesn't have the right connections - to the undead who run the town.

When Claire heads off campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood....

Opening Sentence: On the day Claire became a member of the Glass House, somebody stole her laundry.

Mm. Where to start with this book? I first heard of "The Morganville Vampires" series a few years ago. But by that point it was like... 8 or 9 books into the series. And after having a particularly bad experience with another series that had such a large number of books in it, I was reluctant to start reading this series. Heck, I was already so far behind on it.

But I finally decided to start reading it and to give it a chance. After all I am a vampire lover by nature. And I am really glad that I did. For the most part I really enjoyed this series.

While Claire (our heroine) is a child genius, having graduated from H.S. at the tender age of 16 and starting college and hyped up to be so intelligent for her age, I found her to be rather stupid at times. Like how she continually had no self-preservation for herself and kept throwing herself right in the path of harm (a.k.a. Vampires and Monica Morrell). This was the one thing (heck, really the only thing) in the book that kept getting on my nerves, over and over again.

The plot for Glass Houses was interesting and I really think that it incorporated the idea of Vampires in modern life really well. And I kept finding myself rooting for the humans (and even Michael) to find ways to over come and knock down their throat-biting neighbors. The secret of Michael, was unique and interesting (I wish there would have been a little bit more information given on how it was possible for him to be the way he was) but I have hope that I will learn more as the series goes on (heck, there are still 14 more books for me to read). I enjoyed both the romances between Eve and Michael & Claire and Shane. While we only got a glimpse of what is to come, I can only image these romances will only get more interesting as the series progresses. While Claire got on my nerves, I couldn't help but root for her as Shane started to open up a little to her and their first kiss in her room was just HOT! I found myself laughing the hardest when Claire's parents came to check up on her after her "accident" and found her living in a house with non-college kids and a fridge full (or 1 can at least) of beer and nobody of legal age living there to buy it.

While the search for the mysterious "book" that all vampires want to find, but can't read wasn't really all that original. It was still interesting to see how it would be found (even if it did kind of just, drop in Claire's lap).

Glass Houses was a thoroughly enjoyable book to read. Sure there were some plot wholes, but they weren't glaringly obvious to take away from the plot line. Sure I wish Claire wouldn't of been so pea-brained at times and found herself so beaten up all the time because of it, the other characters made me forget about her faults. My genuine hope for this series, however, is that after I eventually get to the 15th book in this series, that Claire has grown up some and that the book has spanned at least 2 years. Because if after 15 books, and the romance that has started in book 1 hasn't really gone anywhere, I am going to be thoroughly annoyed. LOL

While the ending left us with a dang cliff hanger & for the life of me I kept feeling like I had seen this as a TV series (which I have read, the right's for a TV/Movie show have been sold), Glass Houses was a quick, fun and enjoyable book. I already have The Dead Girl's Dance (book 2) on hold at my library and I can't wait to start reading it.
